SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Hershall E. Lee of Danville, who passed away on December 10, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Hershall Lee was born on September 27, 1931, in Westville, to Lawrence and Nora Wamsher Lee; he attended Fairchild, Union, and Lincoln grade schools; he graduated from Danville High School in 1950 and attended Danville Junior College, the University of Illinois, and graduated from Eastern Illinois University; and

WHEREAS, Hershall Lee enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1954; he did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and military school at Fort Lee, Virginia; he served at Reese in Lubbock, Texas, and during the Korean War he was with the 5th Air Force Advance Headquarters near Seoul, South Korea; he finished his time in the Air Force at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul; he was awarded a Letter of Commendation, the rank of staff sergeant, 4 medals, and 2 battle stars; and

WHEREAS, Hershall Lee married Marian Stockanes on May 12, 1962, with whom he had 2 children, Larry Lee and Sylvia Lee; he later married Katherine Scarlett in 1975, with whom he had 2 more children, Daniel Grinestaff and Jennifer Lee; and

WHEREAS, Hershall Lee became a certified purchasing professional in 1985; he spent most of his years in the field of supervision and management for Allied Signal, Incorporated; he retired in 1994; and

WHEREAS, Hershall Lee played an instrumental role in the development and dedication of the Vermilion County Korean/Vietnam War Memorial in Danville, as well as the Illinois Korean War Memorial in Springfield; he founded the Illinois Korean War Veterans' first chapter in Danville; he helped develop several other programs for veterans and was heavily involved in groups such as the American Legion Post 210, AMBUCS, POW/MIA, and many others; and

WHEREAS, Hershall Lee was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Nora Wamsher Lee; his son, David Grinestaff; his brothers, George, Charles, Ernie, Bob, and Jack; and his sisters, Pauline Lee, Ruby Cripe, Hazel Lamb, and Wilma Nipper; and

WHEREAS, Hershall Lee is survived by his first wife, Marian Stockanes; his children, Larry Lee and Sylvia Lee; his granddaughter, Stephanie Hayward; his second wife, Katherine Scarlett; his children, Daniel Grinestaff and Jennifer Lee; his sister, Fannie Buck; his brother, David (Betty) Lee; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Hershall Lee, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Hershall Lee as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
