SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Marie Ann Vos of Crystal Lake, who passed
4away on January 13, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Marie Vos was born on December 18, 1938 in
6Manhattan, Kansas to Olaf and Lois Heiberg; she graduated from
7Worthington High School, where she played the flute in the
8band; she studied zoology and music at Carleton College in
9Northfield, Minnesota and earned her master's degree in music
10education and her doctoral degree in musicology from Washington
11University in St. Louis, Missouri; during her dissertation
12research on Johann Christian Bach, she uncovered a forgotten
13work, Bach's Gloria in D. Major; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Marie Vos was a longtime music educator; in 1968
15she took a teaching position at McHenry County College and in
161980 formed the McHenry County Youth Orchestra; in 1986 she
17established an associated community music school that grew into
18the McHenry County Music Center, which she led as the executive
19director; she retired in 2005; after retirement she led the
20Illinois Council of Orchestras, serving as board president and
21then executive director until 2010; she also taught private
22studio voice lessons and musicianship classes; and

1    WHEREAS, Marie Vos was active with the First Congregational
2Church, the women's organization P.E.O., the Fox Hills Music
3Teachers' Association, and the professional musicians
4fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon; she also sang with the Chicago
5Master Singers for nearly 20 years; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Marie Vos was preceded in death by her parents and
7by her husband, Wesley Marvin Vos; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Marie Vos is survived by her sons, Robert and
9Thomas; her daughter-in-law, Vivian I-Miao Liu; her grandson,
10Wesley Olaf Vos; and her brother, Thomas Heiberg; therefore, be
11it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Marie Ann Vos, and extend our sincere condolences to her
15family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Marie Vos as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
