SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Marie Ann Vos of Crystal Lake, who passed away on January 13, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Marie Vos was born on December 18, 1938 in Manhattan, Kansas to Olaf and Lois Heiberg; she graduated from Worthington High School, where she played the flute in the band; she studied zoology and music at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota and earned her master's degree in music education and her doctoral degree in musicology from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri; during her dissertation research on Johann Christian Bach, she uncovered a forgotten work, Bach's Gloria in D. Major; and

WHEREAS, Marie Vos was a longtime music educator; in 1968 she took a teaching position at McHenry County College and in 1980 formed the McHenry County Youth Orchestra; in 1986 she established an associated community music school that grew into the McHenry County Music Center, which she led as the executive director; she retired in 2005; after retirement she led the Illinois Council of Orchestras, serving as board president and then executive director until 2010; she also taught private studio voice lessons and musicianship classes; and

WHEREAS, Marie Vos was active with the First Congregational Church, the women's organization P.E.O., the Fox Hills Music Teachers' Association, and the professional musicians fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon; she also sang with the Chicago Master Singers for nearly 20 years; and

WHEREAS, Marie Vos was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Wesley Marvin Vos; and

WHEREAS, Marie Vos is survived by her sons, Robert and Thomas; her daughter-in-law, Vivian I-Miao Liu; her grandson, Wesley Olaf Vos; and her brother, Thomas Heiberg; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Marie Ann Vos, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Marie Vos as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
