SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Mary Louise Bailey of Alton, who passed away on November 10, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Mary Louise Bailey was born on September 28, 1919 in Jefferson City, Missouri to Jasper H. and Ardella Clara (nee Smith) Simmons; she graduated from Lincoln University Laboratory High School in Jefferson City, Missouri and married James Marvin Bailey on October 30, 1938 in Marshall, Missouri; and

WHEREAS, Mary Louise Bailey worked as an elevator operator for a number of years at a commercial building in Alton before becoming a full-time homemaker; and

WHEREAS, Upon moving to Alton, Mary Louise Bailey joined Allen Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church; she later became a charter member of Unity Fellowship Church in Godfrey; along with her husband, she was deeply involved in community activities and, as a result, was awarded the Living Legend Award from the Coalition of Concerned Citizens in 2008; and

WHEREAS, Mary Louise Bailey was preceded in death by her parents, and by her sisters, Jemenia Lansdowne and Vivian Hardimon; and

WHEREAS, Mary Louise Bailey is survived by her sons, Dr. James M. (Michelle) Bailey, Jr. and the Honorable Duane L. (Lois M. Holmes) Bailey; her granddaughters, Tori R. Bailey, Lauren T. Bailey, and Carmen L. Bailey; her grandson, James M. Bailey, III; her great-granddaughters, Sacha N. Brown and Elona M. Williams; her brother and sisters-in-law, Jasper Simmons, Richard (Sallie) Simmons, and Martha A. Green; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends; a special daughter, Brenda Walker-McCain; a special grandson, Jared McCain; her special granddaughters, Brittney, Ciara, and Anita Holmes; a special great-grandson, Princeton James; and treasured friends, Kathleen Holmes and Bonnie Fox; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Mary Louise Bailey, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Mary Louise Bailey as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
