SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jennifer Sinclair Arnold Smith of
4Champaign, who passed away on September 28, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jennifer Arnold Smith graduated from Champaign
6Central High School in 1995 and attended Southern Illinois
7University-Carbondale and the University of Illinois-Chicago
8to earn both her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in
9social work; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Jennifer Arnold Smith spent almost 10 years
11working with students as an advisor and advocate at Parkland
12College in Champaign; she served as the Student Development
13Advocate to the Title II Director to the Student Services
14Advisor; she was instrumental in the Parkland Pathway to
15Illinois program and also envisioned and led the "It's a
16Parkland Thing" advertising campaign featuring local
17student-athletes; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Jennifer Arnold Smith always had a passion for
19helping others; she volunteered on 6 different mission trips
20with the Appalachia Service Project and Operation Hogar, both
21through Faith United Methodist Church, where she was an active
22member; she donated over 789 ounces of breast milk to the

1International Breast Milk Project, which provides breast milk
2to critically ill infants around the world; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Jennifer Arnold Smith shared her own personal
4struggle with breast cancer to educate others who might also be
5struggling with the same disease; she helped launch the
6Champaign-Urbana affiliate of the Young Survival Coalition, a
7national organization for young women facing breast cancer, and
8she was a member of its Leadership Council; she spoke at high
9schools, colleges, and national conferences, and she wrote a
10blog and 2 books and mentored many women one-on-one through
11Imerman Angels; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Jennifer Arnold Smith received many awards and
13recognitions, including being named as a member of the "Central
14Illinois Business Magazine "40 Under 40", the "Illini Radio
15Group 20 Outstanding Women You Should Know", and "Chambana Moms
16to Know" and was inducted into the Parkland College Athletic
17Hall of Fame in 2011; most recently she was named a 2013 Pink
18Power Mom; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Jennifer Arnold Smith was preceded in death by her
20grandparents, Bob and Marcille Sinclair; her uncle, John
21Sinclair; her cousins, Leah Arnold and Dusty Schwendeman; and
22countless friends who were also diagnosed with breast cancer;
23and

1    WHEREAS, Jennifer Arnold Smith is survived by her son,
2Corbin; her parents, Fred and Nancy Arnold; her brother, Eric
3(Christy) Arnold; her sister, Sara (Noah) Hurst; her nephew,
4Jaxson Arnold; her extended family in Ohio; and countless
5friends throughout the United States; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
8Jennifer Sinclair Arnold Smith, and extend our sincere
9condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved
10her; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Jennifer Arnold Smith as an
13expression of our deepest sympathy.
