SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of George Morris, Jr., who passed away on June 15, 2013; and

WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. was born on November 15, 1924, in West Frankfort; his parents were George Sr. and Laura Morris; he married Lola F. (nee Melvin) Morris in 1946, in Pickett, Arkansas; and

WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. served his country with pride in the United States Navy during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater; and

WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. began working in the coal mines in 1947 with the Franklin County Coal Company in Royalton; he subsequently worked for the Freeman Coal Company before transferring to the Peabody Coal Company in 1971; while working for Peabody, he worked as the safety manager at Eagle Mine in Shawneetown; in 1977, he began working at the Morris and Sons Coal Company as the personnel and safety director; his last employment was at Kenellis Energies Inc. in Galatia, where he worked out of the corporate office and handled all labor matters for the company; he also served as president of the local district of United Mine Workers of America and taught mine safety classes at Southeastern Illinois College; and

WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. served his community as a member of Denning Township Board and coached little league baseball when he was younger; he was also a member of West Frankfort Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5764; and

WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lola; his sisters, Thelma, Ruth, and Maxine; his brothers, Vernon, Albert, Doyle, and Harold Morris; and his two infant siblings; and

WHEREAS, George Morris, Jr. is survived by his daughter, Melanie (Gerald) Walker; his son, Rex (Linda) Morris; his grandchildren, Chad Robison and Jamiel Morris; and his great-grandchildren, Jordan and Hunter Robison and Kane and Nia Morris; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his family and friends, mourn the passing of George Morris, Jr.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of George Morris, Jr. as an expression of our sympathy.
