SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Lyle E. Shields of Dewey, who passed away on April 5, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Shields was born on July 26, 1923, in Champaign County; his parents were Fred and Bertha Shields; he married Lois Foster in 1945; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Shields followed in his grandfather and father's footsteps when he became a third-generation farmer; he farmed throughout his entire life; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Shields was active in area government and leadership activities; he was a member of the Champaign County Board for 41 years and served as chairman of the board from 1986 to 1996; he also served as Condit Township supervisor for 36 years and as a volunteer fireman with the Sangamon Valley Fire Protection District for 40 years; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Shields served on the National Association of Counties for 11 years as a member of the board of directors; he served as president of the United Counties Council of Illinois for 2 years; he served as a Republican Precinct Committeeman for 30 years; he was also a member of the Champaign County Farm Bureau; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Shields was selected as Farm Leader of the Year by the Champaign-Urbana News Gazette in 1992; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Shields was preceded in death by his son, James Shields; and

WHEREAS, Lyle Shields is survived by his wife, Lois; his children, Eugene, Sandra (Jim) Stubbins, and Vicki; his daughter-in-law, Stacy; his grandchildren, Jeremy Shields (Ashley), Joshua Shields, Justin and Jonah Shields, Danielle Stubbins, and Jarad Stubbins; his great-granddaughter, Katie; his brother, Duane Shields; his sister-in-law, Pat; and his many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Lyle E. Shields; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Lyle Shields as an expression of our sympathy.
