SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Edward J. Layden Sr. of Hoopeston, who
4passed away on April 6, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Edward Layden Sr. was born on May 23, 1919, in
6Cheneyville; his parents were Edward and Cornelia Layden; he
7married Jean Kinsella in September of 1947, in Bloomington; she
8preceded him in death on May 3, 1958; he married Eileen Green
9on November 26, 1959, in Hoopeston; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Edward Layden Sr. graduated from John Greer High
11School in 1937; he subsequently attended the University of
12Notre Dame and the University of Wisconsin at Madison; he was a
13proud member of the Notre Dame Alumni Association and a
14lifetime member of the University of Wisconsin Alumni
15Association; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Edward Layden Sr. served his country with pride as
17a member of the United States Army; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Edward Layden Sr. had farmed for his entire life
19until his retirement in 2004; he served on the Hoopeston Area
20School Board from 1964 to 1973; he served on the DACC Board of
21Directors from 1976 to 1989 and the DACC Foundation Board from

11990 to 2000; he was also inducted into the DACC Athletic Hall
2Of Fame in 2008 and was recognized as a Founder of DACC in
32011; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Edward Layden Sr. was a lifelong member of St.
5Anthony Catholic Church, where he had served as a trustee and
6also served on the Parish Council; he was also a 4th Degree
7member of the Knights of Columbus; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Edward Layden Sr. enjoyed reading about history,
9with a particular interest in his grandfather's participation
10in the Civil War; he was also an avid sports enthusiast with a
11great passion for Notre Dame; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Edward Layden Sr. was preceded in death by his
13parents; his brothers, Tom and Paul; his sister, Marie Ellen
14McKean; his son, Michael; and his 2 grandchildren; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Edward Layden Sr. is surviving by his wife,
16Eileen; his children, Edward J. (Yvonne) Layden Jr., Tade (Sue)
17Layden, Mary Kay (James) Brown, Margaret (Dr. Alan) Brewer,
18Colleen Layden, Abby (Mark) Linesch, Patrick Layden, and Molly
19(Eric) Miller; his daughter-in-law, Barbara Layden; his 24
20grandchildren; his 16 great-grandchildren; his brother,
21Richard P. Layden; and his sisters, Ruth Marie Carter, Agnes
22(Dr. David) Davis, and Patricia (Leonard) Newman; therefore, be

2    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
3ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
4his family and friends, the passing of Edward J. Layden Sr.;
5and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Edward Layden Sr. as an expression
8of our sympathy.
