SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Odie C. Carpenter Sr.; and

WHEREAS, Odie Carpenter Sr. was born on January 4, 1925, in Macon, Mississippi; his parents were Susie Dolly and Henry Carpenter; and

WHEREAS, Odie Carpenter Sr. attended school in Macon, Mississippi; he later moved to East St. Louis and enlisted into the United States Army as a military policeman; he was awarded a Victory Medal for his service during World War II; while he was in the military, he met and married Ramona Carpenter; and

WHEREAS, After his stint in the Army, Odie Carpenter Sr. returned to East St. Louis and began selling insurance for the Supreme Life Insurance Company; he later began working at St. Clair Laundry; he then left St. Clair and became a mail handler with the United States Postal Service, where he served faithfully until his retirement after 29 years of service; after his retirement from the Postal Service, he served as a school crossing guard for the East St. Louis School District 189; and

WHEREAS, Odie Carpenter Sr. was a member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and served for many years on the church's Usher Board; while serving the ushers, he concurrently served as the treasurer and kept a watchful eye on the ministries revenue; and

WHEREAS, Odie Carpenter Sr. was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother; and his son; and

WHEREAS, Odie Carpenter Sr. is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ramona Carpenter; his daughter, Wanda; his sons, Odie Jr. (Patricia), Danny (Valerie), and Tyrone (Linda); his 14 grandchildren; his 26 great-grandchildren; his special cousin, Willie Reed; and his many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Odie C. Carpenter Sr.; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Odie Carpenter Sr. as an expression of our sympathy.
