SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Roger Joslin of Bonita Springs, Florida,
4who passed away on June 15, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Roger Joslin was born in Bloomington on June 21,
61936 to Doris McLaflin and James Clifford Joslin; he graduated
7from Bloomington High School in 1954, where he was a member of
8the golf team; he graduated summa cum laude from Miami
9University in Oxford, Ohio, where he was president of student
10government, elected Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of the Sigma
11Phi Epsilon fraternity; he received his law degree from the
12University of Illinois Law School, where he was magna cum laude
13and Order of the Coif; he married Stephany "Stevie" on June 14,
141958; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Roger Joslin began his legal career with a law
16firm in Peoria; he returned to Bloomington to be a controller
17for Union Insurance Group; shortly thereafter, he embarked on a
1838-year career with State Farm Insurance, where he started as
19assistant vice-president; ultimately, he became the chief
20financial officer and vice-chairman of the board; he also led
21significant portions of the company's civic leadership
22efforts, including chairmanships of the Neighborhood Housing
23Services and the Social Compact; and

1    WHEREAS, After retirement, Roger Joslin remained active in
2the business community; he served as a director of both Archer
3Daniels Midland and Amlin, a London-based insurance company; he
4also served as chairman of the board of the Western Avenue
5Community Center, chairman of the board of the Advocate BroMenn
6Medical Center, board member of the Bloomington Board of
7Education for 11 years (including 2 terms as president), and as
8a trustee for Illinois Wesleyan University; he was also the
9chairman of the McLean County Republican Central Committee and
10a 2-time delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1972
11and 1976; in 2013, he and his wife were honored by the McLean
12County Museum of History as "History Makers" for their lifetime
13of service to the community; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Roger Joslin enjoyed playing golf and tennis,
15teaching tennis to his children, skiing, reading, and playing
16duplicate bridge; he was a longtime member of the Second
17Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder and chair of the board
18of trustees; he was also an active member of the First
19Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs, Florida; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Roger Joslin is survived by his wife, Stephany
21"Stevie"; his daughter, Jill (Bill); his sons, Scott and Jim
22(Wendy); and 5 grandchildren; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Roger Joslin, and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
4friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Roger Joslin as an expression of our
7deepest sympathy.
