SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Kay Leonard Stephens of Naperville, who
4passed away on September 30, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kay Stephens was born in LaPorte, Indiana on April
67, 1933; she graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle,
7Indiana in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in music education;
8she married John Lewis Stephens, and they settled in Naperville
9in 1965; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Kay Stephens and her husband were involved in the
11founding of the Naperville Heritage Society in 1969; when St.
12John's Episcopal Church, the church she was musical director
13at, needed to be moved, the Society found a new location at a
14site now known as the Naper Settlement; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Kay Stephens always kept a busy schedule of
16charitable activities, music, gardening, training dogs,
17helping special-needs children, and raising her family; she
18planned antique shows, hosted Christmas pageants, developed a
19weed garden that is now managed by the Weed Ladies, penned a
20book about Naperville in the 1970s, and created a music
21education program at Little Friends, Inc.; when her husband
22passed, she created a pet education and training scholarship in

1his name to benefit the Animal Assisted Therapy program at
2Edward Hospital & Health Services in Naperville; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Kay Stephens received a master's degree in music
4from Northern Illinois University in 1986 at the age of 53; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Kay Stephens is survived by her 4 children, Susan,
6John, Ginger, and Jane; 9 grandchildren; and a
7great-grandchild; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
9ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
10Kay Leonard Stephens, and extend our sincere condolences to her
11family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
12further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Kay Stephens as an expression of our
15deepest sympathy.
