SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Charles L. Farinella of Morris, who passed away on July 7, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Charles Farinella was born in Chicago; he graduated from DePaul Academy High School in 1950 and from Kansas State University, where he played on the Wildcat football team, with a master's degree in education; he served in the United States Army during the Korean War; he was a successful amateur boxer in high school and in the military; and

WHEREAS, Affectionally known as "Chuck" or "Coach", Charles Farinella coached track at Proviso East High School in Maywood from 1966 to 1992; he was head coach from 1973 to 1988; during his time at Proviso East, he coached, mentored, and educated a great number of teens; he coached nearly 100 athletes who placed, won, or left their mark on the Illinois Track Association; his teams won a State title in 1980, placed third in 1976, and placed fourth in 1975 and 1985; and

WHEREAS, In addition to the State championships, Charles Farinella's athletes won numerous conference titles; his training techniques were considered revolutionary; these techniques stood the test of time and are commonly used in athletic programs around the world; his athletes fondly remember the "Coach Farinella whistle", which he used to motivate his young men while they competed; one of his most treasured legacies was coaching Greg Foster, who went on to become one of the greatest hurdlers in the world; in addition to creating an indelible mark on high school sports, Greg Foster won numerous State titles, held many national records during his high school career, and went on to win medals at the Olympics and the World Championships in the 110 High Hurdles; and

WHEREAS, Charles Farinella was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Farinella, and by one brother, Joseph Farinella; and

WHEREAS, Charles Farinella is survived by his wife of 57 years, Annette (nee Ancona) Farinella; 2 sons, Joseph (Maureen) and Charles "Chuck" (Sara) Farinella; 2 daughters, Laurie (Sheldon) Sobol and Carol (Paul) Radek; 7 grandchildren, Danielle and Anthony Farinella, Jordann and Megan Farinella, and Reese, Griffin, and Keagan Sobol; one nephew, Michael (Patty) Farinella; and one niece, Jodi (Jim) Fahrenbach; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Charles L. Farinella, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Charles Farinella as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
