SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, A new report by the World Health Organization
3reveals that antibiotic resistance is a serious threat and is
4no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right
5now in every region of the world and has the potential to
6affect anyone, of any age, in any country; antibiotic
7resistance - when bacteria change so antibiotics no longer work
8in people who need them to treat infections - is now a major
9threat to public health; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Urgent, coordinated action is needed or the world
11is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections
12and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can
13once again kill; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Effective antibiotics have allowed people to live
15longer, live healthier, and benefit from modern medicine; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Policymakers can help address the issue of
17antibiotic resistance by: strengthening resistance tracking
18and laboratory capacity, regulating and promoting appropriate
19use of medicines, fostering innovation and research and
20development of new tools, and promoting cooperation and
21information sharing among all stakeholders; and

1    WHEREAS, Unless significant action is taken to improve
2efforts to prevent infections and also change how we produce,
3prescribe, and use antibiotics, the results will be
4devastating; therefore, be it
 
5    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
6ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge Congress to
7dedicate additional National Science Foundation funds to
8antibiotic resistance research and to maximize its efforts in
9addressing the issue as well as work on solutions; and be it
10further
 
11    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
12presented to Senator Richard J. Durbin, Senator Mark Kirk, and
13the rest of the Illinois Congressional Delegation.
