SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. John Clinton Schweitzer of Peoria,
4who passed away on May 4, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer was born in Chicago on October 18,
61935 to Ellen (nee Boughton) and John Jacob Schweitzer; he
7graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in Battle
8Creek, Michigan in 1953 and earned his Bachelor of Science from
9Purdue University in 1957 and his Master of Arts from Western
10Michigan University in 1959; he received his Ph.D. in 1974 from
11the University of North Carolina; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer held the rank of Emeritus Professor
13in the Department of Communications at Bradley University in
14Peoria, where he was department chairman from 1993 to 1999; he
15also taught at Texas Tech University for 9 years, where he was
16Director of Advertising/Public Relations, and, later, Director
17of Graduate Studies in the School of Mass Communications and
18Professor of Communication Studies; he spent the 1999-2000
19academic year in Bulgaria as a Fulbright Scholar in the Faculty
20of Journalism, Sofia University, "St. Clement Ohridski", and at
21the American University in Bulgaria; he was a Visiting Scholar
22at the Hong Baptist University from January to May of 2007 and
23lectured at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore,

1Shanghai International Studies University, and Oxford
2University in the United Kingdom; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer began his newspaper career in 1960
4as the personnel manager of Lindsay-Schaub Newspapers in
5Decatur; he moved to the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer and News as
6personnel director from 1964 to 1970 and was publisher of the
7Terre Haute (Ind.) Tribune-Star for 3 years; he also served as
8Vice-President of Belden Associates and worked for
9Bozell-Jacobs in Dallas, Texas, where he was an adjunct
10professor of marketing at the University of Texas at Dallas; in
111998, he was one of the authors of a successful grant request
12to the Pew Civic Journalism Fund that won a national award, and
13he received grants from the Freedom Forum, the Voice of
14America, and others; he participated in workshops and seminars
15conducted by the Pointer Institute and the American Press
16Institute, authored or co-authored more than 40 refereed
17journal articles, and presented more than 50 invited and
18refereed research papers and addresses at conventions and
19professional meetings in the United States, Bulgaria, Canada,
20China, Czech Republic, England, Hungary, Ireland, Japan,
21Russia, and Poland; he had been a member of the editorial
22review board of the Newspaper Research Journal since its
23inception and served on the editorial board of Forum on Public
24Policy, a journal of Oxford University; he was editor of the
25Southwestern Mass Communication Journal and was involved in

1many scholarly organizations, including the Association for
2Education in Journalism, where he was the head of the media
3management division and co-chair of the Council of Divisions,
4the American Advertising Federation, the International
5Communication Association, The Korean Marketing Institute, and
6the Marketing in Asia Group of Korea; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer was active in the Peoria Area World
8Affairs Council, serving as President in 2012, the League of
9Women Voters, and was on the advisory board of "Look It's My
10Book!", where he served as a grant writer; he was also active
11in Democratic politics, working on Senator Dave Koehler's
12campaigns; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer was preceded in death by his
14parents, and by one brother; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer is survived by his wife, Nancy; 3
16daughters, Lisa (Chuck) Harman-Wakefield, Sue (Dave)
17Meyerhofer, and Sara (Michael) Schweitzer-Mealey; 3
18step-daughters, Kathy (David) Tovson, Karen (Eric) Patton, and
19Christina (Mark) Kleiser-Zalesky; 13 grandchildren; 2
20great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Peter (Elaine) and David
21(Nancy); therefore, be it
 
22    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL

1ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
2Dr. John Clinton Schweitzer, and extend our sincere condolences
3to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
4it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to the family of Dr. Schweitzer as an expression of
7our deepest sympathy.
