SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Marcia Beverly (nee Gray) Martin, widow of former Wheaton Mayor Robert J. Martin, who passed away on February 21, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Marcia Martin was born in Chicago and grew up in the city's South Shore neighborhood; she graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Architecture in 1956, received her master's degree from North Central College, and studied at the University of Chicago and the Institute of Design; she studied with many artists and architects including: Freeman Schoolcraft, Miles Von Der Rohe, Joshua C. Taylor, Alfred Coldwell, Vivian Crylian, Karen Wahler, John Hinrich, and many others; and

WHEREAS, Marcia Martin started her career doing architectural drawings of mechanical systems for McDonald's and other businesses and doing some work for the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado; she worked as a substitute teacher in Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200, and most recently she was a professor of architecture at the College of DuPage; she also designed homes and mechanical systems nationwide and wrote illustrated books, such as "Architectural Design" and "Life in a Small American City: An Artist's View of Wheaton"; and

WHEREAS, Marcia Martin was very involved with the Wheaton Center for History and the homeowners association at Waterford Place in downtown Wheaton, as well as many other community organizations; she enjoyed china painting, book clubs, and traveling throughout the country and Europe; and

WHEREAS, Marcia Martin was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her brother, Joseph (the late Eileen); and by 2 of her nieces, Jennifer Brody and Ivy Erlich; and

WHEREAS, Marcia Martin is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Gregory) Cox; her son, Charles B. (Wendy); her grandchildren, Charles R., Justine, Jacob, Joshua, and Zachary; her identical twin sister, Lita H. (the late Dr. Arnold) Brody; and her nieces, Eileen Erlich, Danielle Erlich, and Heidi Goldberg; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Marcia Beverly Martin, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Marcia Martin as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
