SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Carl Planinc of Carterville, who passed away on March 7, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was born on October 29, 1919 in Johnston City to John and Barbara (nee Golightly) Planinc; he graduated from Johnston City High School in 1937 and joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, helping build Grant City State Park; he married Virginia May Cooksey on April 26, 1941 and served in the United States Army during World War II as a tank driver; after the war, he earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from Southern Illinois University (SIU) in 1950 and 1951 respectively; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was a longtime educator and administrator in Southern Illinois; he taught 7th grade English for 3 years in Cobden and then served as teacher, principal, and superintendent at Johnston City High School over the next several years; he then took the position of Education Television Coordinator at SIU and was instrumental in developing SIU-Tv Channel 8; after taking some time to complete his Doctorate at Indiana University, he returned to SIU to teach education graduate courses; after 13 years back at SIU, he left to become the Associate Dean of Continuing Education at John A. Logan College for 8 years before retiring; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc volunteered extensively in his community; he served as Chairman of the Big Muddy Community Action Agency, as Chairman of the March of Dimes, as President of the Johnston City Rotary Club, as Carterville Precinct Committeeman, as a Southern at 150 Committeeman, and as Senior Vice-Commander of the local Chapter for Disabled American Veterans; in 2009, he was selected as a Leader Among Us by The Southern Illinoisian; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc had a love of aviation and contributed to the field by serving as a board member for the Williamson County Airport Authority for 40 years, serving time as both Chairman and Vice-Chairman; he was elected to the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame in 2012; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Carolyn Sue Blewett; his brothers, Johnny, Billy, and Frank "Runt" Planinc; and his sisters, Esther Coulson and Mary Rose Brymer; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc is survived by his wife of 72 years, Virginia; his sister, Violet Mayer; his grandson, Peyton (Kelly) Blewett; his great-grandson, Brandon Blewett; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Dr. Carl Planinc, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Carl Planinc as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
