SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dr. Carl Planinc of Carterville, who
4passed away on March 7, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was born on October 29, 1919 in
6Johnston City to John and Barbara (nee Golightly) Planinc; he
7graduated from Johnston City High School in 1937 and joined the
8Civilian Conservation Corps, helping build Grant City State
9Park; he married Virginia May Cooksey on April 26, 1941 and
10served in the United States Army during World War II as a tank
11driver; after the war, he earned his Bachelor of Science and
12Master of Science from Southern Illinois University (SIU) in
131950 and 1951 respectively; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was a longtime educator and
15administrator in Southern Illinois; he taught 7th grade English
16for 3 years in Cobden and then served as teacher, principal,
17and superintendent at Johnston City High School over the next
18several years; he then took the position of Education
19Television Coordinator at SIU and was instrumental in
20developing SIU-Tv Channel 8; after taking some time to complete
21his Doctorate at Indiana University, he returned to SIU to
22teach education graduate courses; after 13 years back at SIU,
23he left to become the Associate Dean of Continuing Education at

1John A. Logan College for 8 years before retiring; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc volunteered extensively in his
3community; he served as Chairman of the Big Muddy Community
4Action Agency, as Chairman of the March of Dimes, as President
5of the Johnston City Rotary Club, as Carterville Precinct
6Committeeman, as a Southern at 150 Committeeman, and as Senior
7Vice-Commander of the local Chapter for Disabled American
8Veterans; in 2009, he was selected as a Leader Among Us by The
9Southern Illinoisian; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc had a love of aviation and
11contributed to the field by serving as a board member for the
12Williamson County Airport Authority for 40 years, serving time
13as both Chairman and Vice-Chairman; he was elected to the
14Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame in 2012; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was preceded in death by his
16parents; his daughter, Carolyn Sue Blewett; his brothers,
17Johnny, Billy, and Frank "Runt" Planinc; and his sisters,
18Esther Coulson and Mary Rose Brymer; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc is survived by his wife of 72
20years, Virginia; his sister, Violet Mayer; his grandson, Peyton
21(Kelly) Blewett; his great-grandson, Brandon Blewett; and many
22nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Dr. Carl Planinc, and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Dr. Carl Planinc as an expression of
8our deepest sympathy.
