HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Maurice
4C. Houston of Chicago, who passed away on October 28, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Maurice Houston was born in Chicago on April 20,
61959; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Maurice Houston signed with Granny White and
8Burning White Productions, a division of Columbia and Epic
9Records, at the age of 19; he started Studio "M" in 1983 in the
10family basement and partnered with lifelong friend and business
11partner Roger Simmons; together they moved Studio "M" to
12Washington Street in Waukegan in 1991 and formed Maurog
13Records; he worked with many local Chicago artists such as Lou
14Pride, Mauree', Joan Collaso, Carmen Stokes, Walter Thomas, Ben
15Jammmin' Johnson, Lonnie "Mr. Blues" Givens, and many more; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Mo", Maurice Houston was
17a talented musician and producer who worked with such greats as
18Michael Henderson, Ray Parker Jr., Phyllis Hyman, Sonny Sitt,
19Chaka Khan, Howard Hewett, Cherrelle, Alexander O'Neil, Jean
20Carne, George Johnson of "The Brothers Johnson", The
21Temptations Review with Dennis Edwards, and many more; as
22producer he has recorded with the Staple Singers, the Dells,

1the Friends of Distinction, and Superior Movement; he
2co-produced the first 2 albums of jazz guitarist great Nick
3Colionne and many more world famous musicians; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Maurice Houston was the offspring of music and
5entertainment royalty; his grandfather was Clarence Davis and
6his grandmother, Ernestine "Tiny" Davis, is enshrined in the
7International Jazz Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Missouri; his
8mother, Dorothy Harney, was an accomplished musician as well
9and was the first female electric bassist in the Midwest; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Maurice Houston was preceded in death by his
11mother, Dorothy Harney; his father, Charles Houston; his
12step-father, John Harney; his sisters, Sharon Griffin, Lois
13Houston, and Billie Jean Houston; and his brother, Ronell
14Houston; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Maurice Houston is survived by his son, Charles C.
16Houston; his brother, Steve (Debbie) Houston; his adopted
17brother, Mike Barbee; his niece, Portia Griffen; and his
18nephews, Steven James and Brian James; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21we mourn the passing of Maurice C. Houston, and extend our
22sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew

1and loved him; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3presented to the family of Maurice Houston as an expression of
4our deepest sympathy.
