HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Frankie Sutherland on her retirement from General George S. Patton School District 133; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Frankie Sutherland has spent 29 years in the field of education; the last 17 of those years in District 133, with 7 of them as principal and 10 as superintendent; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Frankie Sutherland graduated from Tougaloo College in Mississippi in 1972 and began teaching at Malcolm X College in Chicago; in 1984, she moved to the Chicago Public School system at Medill Primary School and in 1996 she joined General George S. Patton School District 133 in Riverdale to serve as principal, then assistant superintendent, and eventually superintendent; during this time, she received 2 masters degrees from Chicago State University, one in school guidance and counseling and the other in educational administration; she received her doctorate from Loyola University in Chicago in educational leadership; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Frankie Sutherland volunteered with the Ebony Fashion Fair from 1996 to 2001, serving as general chairperson in 1999 and 2000 to raise money for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF); she is active in the Chicago Inter Alumni Council, which is made up of historically black colleges and assists with several fundraisers throughout the year sponsored by the council where the proceeds go to the UNCF; she sponsors students in her school district for the week-long annual Young Leadership Program in Washington, D.C., and she sponsors a student in her school district for a summer internship in the business department at Stanford University in California; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Frankie Sutherland is a member of the American Association of School Administrators, the Illinois Association of School Administrators, the NAACP, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and many other non-profit organizations; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Frankie Sutherland has one son, Steven Craig Sutherland and one grandson, Steven Jr.; she enjoys attending Steven Jr.'s sporting events, gardening, and traveling; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Frankie Sutherland's retirement will become official on June 30, 2013; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. Frankie Sutherland on her retirement, thank her for her commitment to education, and wish her all the best in her future endeavours; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Dr. Frankie Sutherland as an expression of our esteem and respect.
