HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Glenn "Max" McGee,
4Ph.D., on his retirement as president of the Illinois
5Mathematics and Science Academy as of June 30, 2013; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. McGee has served as president of the Illinois
7Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) since 2007, where he has
8extended and deepened IMSA's statewide presence with the
9opening of 3 field offices, expanded programs and services, and
10launched an online teaching and learning initiative; he is
11recognized as a dynamic leader, speaker, and writer on critical
12issues in educational policy and practice; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In 2009, Dr. McGee led the academy to receive
14Intel's "Star Innovator Award" as the top high school in
15America and guided the academy through periods of significant
16challenges; as a member of the Illinois P-20 Council and
17co-chair of the Data, Assessment, and Accountability
18Committee, he continually strives to ensure that all students
19receive the opportunities for access to the highest quality of
20education; in his P-20 role, he was instrumental in leading the
21design and development of the new Illinois State report card,
22which was passed unanimously by the General Assembly; and

1    WHEREAS, Prior to coming to the IMSA, Dr. McGee served as
2the State Superintendent of Education and has been a teacher,
3principal, and district superintendent; as State
4Superintendent of Education he worked to increase funding for
5reading, early childhood education, and technology acquisition
6as well as ensure that every Illinois high school junior had
7the opportunity to take the ACT; he currently serves on the
8board of directors of the Golden Apple Foundation, the Great
9Books Foundation, the P-20 Council, the Illinois Association
10for Gifted Children, and the Diversifying Higher Education
11Faculty in Illinois; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. McGee is a regular speaker at State and
13national conferences; he has published several articles and
14coauthored 2 books; his published research on high-achieving,
15high-poverty schools that have closed the achievement gap has
16garnered State and national attention for identifying how
17schools and communities can help all students succeed; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. McGee credits his family with being his
19inspiration; he and his wife, Jan, the executive director of
20the Associated Colleges of Illinois' Center for Success in High
21Needs Schools, have 3 children, one grandson, and 2
22granddaughters; therefore, be it
 
23    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

1NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
2we recognize Dr. Glenn McGee on his retirement as president of
3the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, thank him for his
4dedication to the education of Illinois students, and wish him
5well in all his future endeavours; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to Dr. Glenn McGee as an expression of our esteem and
8respect.
