HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Glenn "Max" McGee, Ph.D., on his retirement as president of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy as of June 30, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Dr. McGee has served as president of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) since 2007, where he has extended and deepened IMSA's statewide presence with the opening of 3 field offices, expanded programs and services, and launched an online teaching and learning initiative; he is recognized as a dynamic leader, speaker, and writer on critical issues in educational policy and practice; and

WHEREAS, In 2009, Dr. McGee led the academy to receive Intel's "Star Innovator Award" as the top high school in America and guided the academy through periods of significant challenges; as a member of the Illinois P-20 Council and co-chair of the Data, Assessment, and Accountability Committee, he continually strives to ensure that all students receive the opportunities for access to the highest quality of education; in his P-20 role, he was instrumental in leading the design and development of the new Illinois State report card, which was passed unanimously by the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, Prior to coming to the IMSA, Dr. McGee served as the State Superintendent of Education and has been a teacher, principal, and district superintendent; as State Superintendent of Education he worked to increase funding for reading, early childhood education, and technology acquisition as well as ensure that every Illinois high school junior had the opportunity to take the ACT; he currently serves on the board of directors of the Golden Apple Foundation, the Great Books Foundation, the P-20 Council, the Illinois Association for Gifted Children, and the Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Dr. McGee is a regular speaker at State and national conferences; he has published several articles and coauthored 2 books; his published research on high-achieving, high-poverty schools that have closed the achievement gap has garnered State and national attention for identifying how schools and communities can help all students succeed; and

WHEREAS, Dr. McGee credits his family with being his inspiration; he and his wife, Jan, the executive director of the Associated Colleges of Illinois' Center for Success in High Needs Schools, have 3 children, one grandson, and 2 granddaughters; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize Dr. Glenn McGee on his retirement as president of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, thank him for his dedication to the education of Illinois students, and wish him well in all his future endeavours; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Glenn McGee as an expression of our esteem and respect.
