HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Martha Rogers, who passed away on June 24, 2014; and

WHEREAS, Martha Rogers was born on October 15, 1929 in St. Francisville, Louisiana; her parents were Mamie and Gordon Blacher; she completed her secondary education at McKinley High School in Baton Rouge; in the late 1940s, she relocated to Chicago, where she met and married her husband, Edward Rogers, Jr.; and

WHEREAS, Martha Rogers accepted Christ at an early age and united with Magnolia Baptist Church of St. Francisville, Louisiana; in later years, she relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and became a member of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Scotlandville, Louisiana; she was a member of Lilydale Progressive Missionary Baptist Church over 52 years; she was active and served on such ministries as the Evergreen Club, the Shepard's Ministry, the Mother's Board, and Sunday school; in 2013, she was honored with the Pearl Award during Lilydale's centennial celebration; and

WHEREAS, Martha Rogers' love of elegance, style, and beauty led her to complete a degree in cosmetology; she went on to become a successful licensed cosmetologist for over 55 years; and

WHEREAS, Martha Rogers was preceded in death by her husband; 6 brothers, Thomas, Melvin, Joe P., James, Anderson and William (Preacher); and a sister, Lucille Hunter; and

WHEREAS, Martha Rogers is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Tarita Rogers; a son, Edward Duane Rogers; a sister, Malinda Blacher; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, extended family members, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with her family and friends, mourn the passing of Martha Rogers; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Martha Rogers as an expression of our sympathy.
