HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Lucille
4"Jackie" Gallagher, who passed away on April 22, 2014; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was born on June 7, 1928 in
6Chicago to Louis and Lucille Jaacks, the youngest of 3
7children; she graduated from St. Genevieve Grammar and
8Providence High Schools in Chicago, and attended the School of
9the Art Institute in Chicago; she married Will Gallagher in
101950 and they became parents of 4 children; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was involved in Democratic
12politics at the local, State and national levels for her entire
13adult life, involving her children right alongside her going
14door-to-door, distributing yard signs, and attending rallies;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher worked for passage of the Equal
17Rights Amendment in Illinois, believing that equality for women
18was essential to the country's future; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was one of the original staff
20members hired by then-Democratic leader Michael J. Madigan in
211981, and worked for him after he became Speaker of the

1Illinois House of Representatives in 1983; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher served as a key advisor and a
3tough and straight-talking spokesperson for the Chicago
4Teachers Union under presidents Jacqueline B. Vaughn and Thomas
5Reece; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was appointed to head the
7Illinois Labor Relations Board, a post she held from 2003 until
8her retirement; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher's commitment to Democratic
10politics and her belief in women's rightful place in the
11political arena led her to serve on the founding board of
12Illinois Women in Leadership, a training program for Democratic
13women who wish to seek elective office; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher devoted her life to the political
15process because of her belief in the importance of the process
16and the ideals of the Democratic party; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher's influence on candidates,
18legislative staffers, elected officials, and labor leaders
19will be felt for years to come; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher was preceded in death by her

1parents, and by her son, Paul; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Jackie Gallagher is survived by her children,
3Audrey, Hugh, and Jane; her ex-husband, Will; her grandson,
4James and his fiancee Layla Lewis; and her brothers, Louis and
5Richard; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we mourn the passing of Jackie Gallagher, and we extend our
9sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
10and loved her; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of Jackie Gallagher as an expression of
13our deepest sympathy.
