HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Roosevelt Griffin on the
4occasion of winning the Golden Apple Award for excellence in
5teaching for his work as Band Director at Harvey School
6District 152; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Since 1986, Golden Apple has been a leader in
8advancing the teaching profession in Illinois for 29 years and
9has recognized outstanding teachers throughout Illinois each
10year; Golden Apple's selection committee is comprised of
11prominent retired teachers, college and university professors,
12administrators, and former Golden Apple Award recipients; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Roosevelt Griffin was born and raised in Harvey,
14where he received his elementary education in Harvey School
15District 152; he attended Riley Elementary and Gwendolyn Brooks
16Middle School before attending Thornridge High School, where he
17became an All-Conference athlete; he subsequently graduated
18from Northern Illinois University, where he received an
19Illinois Teaching Certificate in Instrumental Music and a
20Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance; he later returned to
21academics and received a Masters of Arts in School Leadership
22in 2011 from Concordia University; he is currently pursuing a
23Doctorate in Organizational Leadership at Argosy University;

2    WHEREAS, Roosevelt Griffin became Band Director of School
3District 152 in 2004; during his tenure, the Harvey Band
4Program has received great honors for its dedication to the art
5of jazz and has received top ratings and accolades from all
6around the country; under his direction, the Brooks Middle
7School Band has become the youngest performing group in the
8history of the "Chicago Jazz Festival"; the band was selected
9as one of 2 middle school jazz bands to perform at the largest
10band and orchestra conference in the world; the program was
11also awarded a full endorsement from one of the leading
12mouthpiece companies in the industry and was recently featured
13in Downbeat magazine; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In March of 2013, Roosevelt Griffin and the
15Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School Jazz were honored to perform at
16the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development
17International Conference, where they received a standing
18ovation from an audience of 10,000 educators, administrators,
19and politicians from around the world; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Roosevelt Griffin serves as a model of hard work,
21integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of
22Illinois; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we congratulate Roosevelt Griffin on the occasion of winning
4the Golden Apple Award and wish him continued success and
5happiness in the future; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to Roosevelt Griffin as a symbol of our esteem and
8respect.
