HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Susan G. Komen Foundation has become the
3global leader in the fight against breast cancer, transforming
4how the world talks about and treats the disease, and has
5helped turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast
6cancer survivors; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Every 2 minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast
8cancer, and every 13 minutes, a woman who is loved is lost to
9this disease; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Central Illinois native Nancy G. Brinker promised
11her dying sister Suzy more than 30 years ago that she would do
12everything in her power to end breast cancer forever, with that
13promise becoming the Susan G. Komen Foundation, now the largest
14source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast
15cancer; and
 
16    WHEREAS, The Susan G. Komen Memorial Affiliate serves women
17and families in 36 counties across central Illinois, including
18Sangamon County; and
 
19    WHEREAS, The Komen Memorial Affiliate already awarded
20nearly $80,000 in local community health grants in the
21Springfield area last year, including providing free

1mammography services to uninsured women; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The Komen Memorial Affiliate has a successful
3history of fundraising events including Race for the Cure 5K
4races in Peoria and Bloomington, but not yet in Springfield;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Komen Memorial Affiliate is proud to bring the
7Komen Race for the Cure to Springfield for the first time on
8May 16, 2014; and
 
9    WHEREAS, The Inaugural Komen Springfield Race for the Cure
105K will be the Foundation's first evening race and will bring
11participants to downtown Springfield, ending at the State
12Capitol; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Racers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to
14participate and raise funds to support the Susan G. Komen
15Foundation to end breast cancer and save lives; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Dr. Jane Arbuthnot and Victoria Ringer, both of
17Springfield, are serving as the Race's Honorary
18Co-Chairpersons; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Julie Henderson, an 8-year breast cancer
20survivor, and her daughter Nicole Henderson, are serving as the

1first Komen Race mother and daughter co-chairpersons; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The supporters of the Inaugural Komen Springfield
3Race for the Cure hope to "paint the Capitol area pink" in
4support of breast cancer awareness and finding a cure, with a
5highlight of ending the evening with pink fireworks on the
6Capitol lawn; and
 
7    WHEREAS, With our help and support, the Komen Memorial
8Affiliate will raise even more money to fight breast cancer in
9our communities with 75% of the net proceeds directly funding
10programs in the service area and 25% supporting national
11research; and
 
12    WHEREAS, State Representative David Leitch has long
13supported the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Komen Memorial
14Affiliate, serving as board member and being a personal friend
15of the late Suzy Komen, and we thank him and honor him for his
16work; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
19we recognize the Susan G. Komen Foundation for its unwavering
20commitment to saving lives and ending breast cancer and show
21our support for the Inaugural Komen Springfield Race for the
22Cure on May 16, 2014, and wish all those involved all the best

1in their endeavors; and be it further
 
2    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
3presented to Springfield Race for the Cure co-chairpersons,
4Julie and Nicole Henderson.
