SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Charles H. "Charlie" Nogle of Champaign,
4who passed away on March 16, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Charlie Nogle was born in Champaign to J. Harold
6and Audra Bailey Nogle on February 5, 1931; he graduated from
7Champaign High School in 1949; while in high school, he learned
8to fly at the Champaign airport using his uncle's airplane; he
9attended Miami University in Ohio, where he was a member of
10ROTC and the Phi Delta Theta fraternity; he transferred to the
11University of Illinois for his senior year and graduated with a
12degree in business in 1953; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Charlie Nogle started his career with Illinois
14Bell in Aurora; in 1954, he returned home to transition his
15family's heating and coal supply business into the natural gas
16HVAC industry; he expanded into commercial real estate
17development, building apartment and restaurant investment
18properties; he partnered with the Monical Pizza Corporation as
19an investor and developer, building restaurants around central
20Illinois; he was a key player in keeping Monical's Pizza
21locally owned; for over 35 years, he was a director of
22Monical's Pizza; and

1    WHEREAS, Charlie Nogle's passion was aviation; he owned and
2flew over 30 different makes and models of aircraft; he
3achieved commercial pilot with single and multi-engine and
4instrument ratings; in the mid-1950s, he started acquiring
5parts to rebuild his dream aircraft, a T-34 Mentor, which was
6used by both the Air Force and Navy for training; his first
7project led to dozens more, and over the years, he became
8recognized as the worldwide authority on the T-34 Mentor; he
9founded the T-34 Association and became known by that community
10as "Mr. Mentor"; he was a longtime EAA Warbirds of America
11director and was an honored member of both the Illinois
12Aviation Hall of Fame and the EAA Warbirds of America Hall of
13Fame; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Charlie Nogle was an avid World War II historian,
15especially as it related to military aviation, and amassed an
16extensive WWII book collection; he was also a dedicated
17supporter of the Ernie Pyle Museum in Dana, Indiana; he was a
18fan of all wildlife and his family's many canine companions; he
19was an active supporter of various local and national animal
20protection charities; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Charlie Nogle was an Eagle Scout and lifelong
22supporter of Camp Drake; in 2008, in honor of his father,
23Harold Nogle, he commissioned the design and construction of
24the Camp Drake Shooting Sports Range; and

1    WHEREAS, Charlie Nogle is survived by his wife of 30 years,
2Diana; his sister, Marianne Wilson; his children, James Nogle
3(Gayle), Charles J. "Jud" Nogle (Ann), John Nogle (Diane), and
4Ellen Nogle Proffit (Matthew); his grandchildren, Joel, Jeff,
5Olivia, and Ainsley; his great-grandchildren, Liam and Emma;
6his stepchildren, Stephanie and Joshua; his
7step-grandchildren, Chelsea, Sheldon, Brennan, Arianna, Arwen,
8and Janie; and his stepgreat-granddaugher, Sophia; therefore,
9be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Charles H. "Charlie" Nogle and extend our sincere condolences
13to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
14it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Charlie Nogle as an expression of
17our deepest sympathy.
