SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, More than 600,000 people in the United States are estimated to develop venous thromboembolism or clots in the veins every year; of these, about 400,000 people develop deep vein thrombosis of the legs; and

WHEREAS, Pulmonary embolism, a serious and potentially fatal complication of vein thrombosis, affects at least 200,000 people in the United States annually; and

WHEREAS, The Surgeon General has declared that 100,000, and perhaps as many as 180,000, individuals die directly or indirectly as a result of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism each year; and

WHEREAS, Atrial fibrillation, a potentially serious cardiac condition characterized by an irregular heart rhythm, affects more than 2 million people in the United States and can lead to thromboembolic strokes; and

WHEREAS, Through public awareness, the State of Illinois seeks to minimize the frequency of deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and thromboembolism resulting from atrial fibrillation among all Illinois citizens and those who visit the State; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare October of 2015 as Thrombosis Awareness Month; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we recognize the importance of the ongoing fight against deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and strokes caused by atrial fibrillation.
