SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Arthur Greenberg of Peoria, who passed
4away on January 21, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was born on July 31, 1929, in
6Chicago; his parents were Irving and Dorothy Gordon Greenberg;
7he married Bonnie Mosiman on February 9, 1994, in Peoria; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a graduate of the University
9of Illinois and the University of Michigan Law School in Ann
10Arbor; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg served his country as a member of
12the United States Navy during the Korean War; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a noted attorney in the
14Peoria area for many years, engaging in the practice of law
15from 1957 to 1978, 1982 to 1997, 1999, and 2000; he also served
16as a resident circuit judge in the Illinois Tenth Judicial
17Circuit in Peoria County (1997-1998), commissioner on the
18Inquiry Board of the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary
19Commission (1997), assistant state's attorney in Peoria County
20(1960 and 1962), and special prosecutor and receiver in special
21cases; he was licensed to practice law in all local federal

1courts, the State of Illinois, the State of Michigan, and
2before the United States Supreme Court; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg served as president of the Peoria
4County Bar Association (1992-1993), the Standing Committee on
5Illinois Bar Journal Editorial Board (2005-2006) and the
6Illinois Central College Justice Advisory Board (2005-2011);
7he served as general counsel and director of Planning and
8Development for the Peoria Journal Star Inc. (PJS) and its
9subsidiaries in both publishing and broadcasting; he served as
10vice president and operating officer of Compass Systems Inc., a
11communications, research, and development corporation based in
12Peoria and a subsidiary of PJS (1979-1981); he also worked for
13Continental Assurance Company of Chicago; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg served as a Distinguished
15Lecturer in Business and Criminal Justice at Eureka College
16(2000 to 2011); he was a lecturer at the University of Illinois
17School of Medicine in Peoria (1973-1974) and Bradley
18University, serving as adjunct instructor of numerous courses,
19and the Illinois Bar Association Institute of Continuing
20Education (1963-1972); he lectured or spoke at numerous
21educational institutions, business, and social organizations
22and citizen groups, frequently appearing on both television and
23radio, speaking on such diverse subjects as law, social
24problems, art, and music; he was also involved in the Lawyers

1Constitutional Defense Committee, participating in civil
2rights and legal activities in the South during "Freedom
3Summer" in 1964; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a member of the American Bar
5Association, the Illinois Bar Association, the Illinois Judges
6Association, the Peoria County Bar Association, the Chicago Bar
7Association, the State Bar of Michigan, the National Legal Aid
8and Defender Association, and many other professional and legal
9organizations; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg served with the Board of
11Directors of the Central Illinois Private Industry Council
12(1990-1997), the Rotary Club of Peoria, the Peoria Housing
13Authority (1986-1989), the Liquor Commission of the City of
14Peoria (1982-1986), the Creve Coeur Club, the Board of Trustees
15of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Peoria (1988-1989,
161992-1993, 1999-2002), the Bradley University Committee for
17the Use of Animals for the Subject of Research (1989-1997), the
18American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the
19Board of Directors of Peoria City Beautiful (1981-1987), the
20Child Abuse Advisory Council, the Board of Directors of the
21Fayette Companies, the parent corporation of the Human Service
22Center (1981-1992), the Board of Directors of the Human Service
23Center Foundation (1992-1996), the Board of Directors of the
24Human Service Center (1976-1980, 1982-1991), the Board of

1Directors of the Ecumenical Urban Ministry (1977-1978), the
2Board of Directors of the Stonehenge Foundation (1975), the
3Board of Directors of the Peoria Art Guild (1972-1977), the
4Board of Directors of the Central Illinois Youth Symphony
5(1968-1970), the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
6No. 814, the Board of Trustees of Congregation Anshai Emeth
7(1964-1967, 1992-1993, 1995-1997), the Board of Directors of
8the Peoria Jewish Community Council, the Community Relations
9Committee (1967-1969), the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai
10B'rith, the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment
11Officials, the National Association for the Advancement of
12Colored People (NAACP), the Congress of Racial Equality
13(1964-1965), the National Audubon Society, the Sierra Club, the
14Peoria Commission on Human Relations (June and July 1969), the
15Board of Directors of Youth Farm Inc. (1967-1970), the Peoria
16Urban Renewal Advisory Committee (1972-1974), the Citizens
17Advisory Council for Community Improvement, the Minority
18Housing Group and Relocation Committee (1967-1969), and the
19American Civil Liberties Union (1963-1965, 1967-1968,
201982-1983); he also investigated urban problems in Trenton and
21Newark, New Jersey, in the summer of 1968; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a photographer who exhibited
23his photography, most recently at the National Archives in
24Washington, D.C. (1999-2001), and lectured on photographic
25subjects at numerous galleries and educational institutions

1throughout the United States; in 1973 he participated in
2"Documerica", an historic documentary project for the federal
3government; he also studied with some of the photographic
4masters of the 20th century, including Minor White, Paul
5Caponigro, and Ruth Bernhard; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was a member of the Universalist
7Unitarian Church in Peoria and Congregation Anshai Emeth in
8Peoria; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg received numerous honors and
10awards, including the Helen Cleaver Distinguished Teaching
11Award at Eureka College; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg was preceded in death by his
13parents and his granddaughter, Leah Dunavan; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Arthur Greenberg is survived by his wife, Bonnie;
15his children, Dean Greenberg and Nina Dunavan; his grandson,
16Abraham Traverso; his great-grandson, Mateo Traverso; and his
17sister, Nancy Plotkin; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
20his family and friends, the passing of Arthur Greenberg; and be
21it further

2presented to the family of Arthur Greenberg as an expression of
3our sympathy.
