SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Jacoby Dickens of Chicago; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens was born in Panama City, Florida,
5in 1932; he and his family moved to Chicago's south side early
6in his childhood; he graduated from Wendell Phillips High
7School and went into business as a real estate developer in the
8same south side neighborhoods where he was raised; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens would purchase, renovate, and
10lease apartment buildings in Chicago; during the height of his
11success he managed more than 100 apartments; in 1971, he sold
12his real estate holdings and purchased several bowling alleys
13in Chicago and began running those; while running the bowling
14alleys, he joined the board of Seaway National Bank, one of the
15largest African American-owned financial institutions in the
16country; he joined Seaway National in 1979 as vice-chairman and
17became chairman in 1983; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens has distinguished himself with his
19philanthropic efforts; he designed a loan and scholarship
20program at DePaul University named in his honor and has donated
21more than $1 million to Chicago State University; on December

1Athletics Building was renamed the Jacoby D. Dickens Physical
2Education and Athletics Center; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens embodied the spirit of Chicago
4State University; he valued education and dedicated himself to
5helping the university achieve its mission to help students; he
6had extensive involvement with many aspects of the university,
7including serving on the board of trustees for the university
8and the board of directors of the Chicago State University
9Foundation; his commitment to education will live on in The
10Jacoby Dickens Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships to
11multiple students annually, allowing these students to more
12easily afford higher education; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Jacoby Dickens's is survived by his wife, Veranda,
14and all the Dickens family; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Jacoby Dickens, and extend our sincere condolences to his
18family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
19further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Jacoby Dickens as an expression of
22our deepest sympathy.
