SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Frank C. Rathje Jr., who passed away on
4May 10, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Frank Rathje Jr. was born and raised in Chicago;
6after attending high school at Northwestern Military Academy in
7Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, he attended Lawrence University in
8Appleton, Wisconsin; after one semester at Lawrence, he left
9and joined the United States Navy during World War II; after
10serving as a radio man on a transport ship, he returned to
11college, graduating from Grinnell College in Iowa in 1950; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Frank Rathje Jr. spent more than 35 years in
13banking in the Chicago area; after graduating from college, he
14joined Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust Co., where
15he steadily rose through the ranks before becoming
16vice-president in 1964; he later served as president of
17Elmhurst National Bank and the bank's parent company, Elm
18Marine Bancshares; he also served as chairman and president of
19Illinois Valley Bancshares until he sold it in 1992 and decided
20to retire; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Frank Rathje Jr. served on Elmhurst College's
22Board of Trustees from 1982 until 1989 and remained a trustee

1emeritus until his passing; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Frank Rathje Jr. served on the Glenwood School for
3Boys and Girls board from 1980 until 1983, and was the driving
4force behind the creation of the school's 420-acre west campus
5in St. Charles in 1993; in honor of his work at Grinnell
6College, a student residence at the college was named Rathje
7Hall in 2006; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Frank Rathje Jr. was preceded in death by his
9wife, Marion; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Frank Rathje Jr. is survived by his daughter,
11Karen Rathje Shaw; his sister, Shirley Reed; his 2
12grandchildren; and his great-grandson; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15his family and friends, the passing of Frank C. Rathje Jr.; and
16be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Frank Rathje Jr. as an expression of
19our sympathy.
