SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Edward W. "Eddie" Smolich, who passed away on September 29, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Edward Smolich was born on April 14, 1920, in South Wilmington; he resided in the Joliet area for most of his life; and

WHEREAS, Edward Smolich proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Army's Headquarters Battery, 101st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in New Guinea; he received the Bronze Star, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon, the American Overseas Victory Ribbon, the Overseas Service Bar, and the American Theatre Campaign Ribbon for his meritorious service; and

WHEREAS, Edward Smolich and his brother, Rudy, were the owners and operators of Smolich Brothers Sausage Company since 1971; and

WHEREAS, Edward Smolich was a Life Member of V.F.W. Cantigny Post #367 and the American Legion Post #1080; he was also a member of The Joliet Moose Lodge #300, the American Fraternal Union, Joliet Knights of Columbus #382, the St. Joseph Holy Name Society, the Senior Citizens Association, the Old Timer's Baseball Association, and the Will County Seniors; and

WHEREAS, Edward Smolich was preceded in death by his loving wife, Evelyn Smolich; his son, John Edward Smolich; his great-granddaughter; his parents, Anton and Catherine (nee Spelich) Smolich; and his 4 sisters and 3 brothers; and

WHEREAS, Edward Smolich is survived by his loving and devoted daughters, Mary Kay (Bill) Schmitt and JoAnne (Doug) Marshall; his grandchildren; Nancy (Scott) Lewandowski, Laura (Louie) Mau, Cathy (Brad) Blankenship, Kelly (Todd) Michael, Brad (Amy) Marshall, Angela (Guadalupe) Reyes, Beth (Kyle) Brown, and John (Amy) Smolich; his 17 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Louis Smolich and Rudy (Lois) Smolich; his sisters, Maggie Smolich and Francie Sovich; his special loving and devoted friend, Irene Vercellino; and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Edward W. "Eddie" Smolich; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Edward Smolich as an expression of our sympathy.
