SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Mayme Finley Spencer of Evanston, who
4passed away on February 8, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, She was born February 28, 1921 and grew up in
6Milwaukee, Wisconsin; her father, Robert, worked construction
7for the city and her mother, Evelyn, was a housewife; her
8parents died prior to her entering high school, and she raised
9her three siblings by herself with help from an uncle; and
 
10    WHEREAS, After graduating from Marquette University, she
11moved to Chicago and found work as a lab technician at Mt.
12Sinai Hospital; she received her law degree from Chicago-Kent
13College of Law, and continued to practice law up until her
14passing; and
 
15    WHEREAS, She married Warren Frank Spencer, an Evanston
16doctor; she became an Evanston alderman, and made fair housing
17her priority; her fair housing ordinance was one of her biggest
18achievements; and
 
19    WHEREAS, When her service as an alderman ended she became a
20member of the Northern Illinois University board of trustees
21and served on former Illinois Governor Walker's commission on

1race relations; she was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and
2enjoyed playing bridge, bingo, and working crossword puzzles;
3she was very proud of her family, and loved having Sunday
4brunch with them; and
 
5    WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents; her
6three siblings; and her husband; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Mayme Finley Spencer is survived by her daughters,
8Clothield Miller and her husband, Willie J. Miller, Wendy
9Spencer and her long-time friend, George Griffin, Karen Spencer
10Kelly and her husband, John B. Kelly, and Shelley Spencer
11Fitzsimmons and her husband, Patrick Fitzsimmons; and her eight
12grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
15her family and friends, the passing of Mayme Finley Spencer;
16and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Mayme Finley Spencer as a symbol of
19our sincere sympathy.
