SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Leland Edwin "Smitty" Smith Sr. of
4Collinsville, who passed away on October 5, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Leland Smith Sr. was born on August 21, 1926, in
6York, Nebraska; and
 
7    WHEREAS, As a youth, Leland Smith Sr. won a state-wide
8table tennis tournament in Texas; he was also awarded a
9scholarship to play football at Baylor University; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Leland Smith Sr. served his country with pride and
11distinction as a member of the United States Navy aboard the
12USS Thornton during World War II; and
 
13    WHEREAS, In 1961, Leland Smith Sr. opened Grandpa's
14Jewelry, which eventually became an 18-store chain; he
15subsequently opened L.E. Smith Jewelers in 2000; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Leland Smith Sr. was a member of the Good Shepherd
17Lutheran Church and the Collinsville Chamber of Commerce; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Leland Smith Sr. was preceded in death by his
19parents, Leland H. and Lissette Smith; and

1    WHEREAS, Leland Smith Sr. is survived by his loving wife of
261 years, Gloria "Gayle" Smith; his sons, Leland E. (Sherri
3Lowe) Smith Jr., James C. (Lisa) Smith, and Casey V. Smith; his
4daughters, Georgia C. (Troy) Crites, Gloria H. (Tom) Fayollat,
5Cindy G. (Mac) Fortenberry, June M. (Mike) Zavaglia, and Susan
6J. Smith; his grandchildren, Troy David Crites, Nicol Crites,
7Tom Fayollat, Jr., Tracy Pickford, Quinton Smith, Chanelle
8Smith, Lauren Smith, Cody Hopkins, Kendall Hopkins, Garrett
9Zavaglia, Shane Zavaglia, and Jordan Zavaglia; his
10great-grandchildren, Vivian Crites, Jonah Crites, Coleton
11Rice, Trey Fayollat, Frankie Fayollat, Chloe Pickford, and
12Kacey Smith; his brother, George W. Smith; his sisters, Betty
13Swan and Barbara Smith; and his many other relatives and
14friends; therefore, be it
 
15    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
17his family and friends, the passing of Leland Edwin "Smitty"
18Smith Sr.; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Leland Smith Sr. as an expression of
21our sympathy.
