SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Ronald Stuart Wilson Chew of Oak Park,
4who passed away on June 7, 2011; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ronald Stuart Wilson Chew was born on July 15,
61933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Marjorie Oberhaltzer
7and Russell Chew; he was married to Karla Hoover Chew, his
8partner in peace, for 49 years; and
 
9    WHEREAS, He was an insurance statistician, teacher, and
10Korean War veteran; he graduated from Michigan State University
11(B.A.) and Roosevelt University (M.A.) in economics; he enjoyed
12canoeing, skiing, camping, biking, jogging, and hiking
13(especially in the mountains); he was a social activist for
14peace, labor, economic, environmental justice, and poverty,
15volunteered at the Columbus Park Food Pantry and West Suburban
16PADS, and was a member of Veterans for Peace and the Oak Park
17Committee for Truth and Justice; and
 
18    WHEREAS, He was a generous contributor to over 65
19organizations, including earthquake relief in Haiti, UUSC-UUA,
20Partners for Peace, Habitat for Humanity, Oxfam, Lambi Fund,
21Pakistan flood relief, several American Indian educational
22organizations, and Iraq Veterans Against the War; he also spent

1several weeks volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in New
2Orleans over several years following Hurricane Katrina; and
 
3    WHEREAS, He was a member and past president of Third
4Unitarian Church of Chicago and past president of Unitarian
5Universalists for a Just Economic Community; he could
6frequently be seen with the group holding anti-war signs at the
7Austin Boulevard ramp above the Eisenhower Expressway during
8the early years of the Iraq war.; he and his wife worked with
9Dick Simpson to found the IVI-IPO (Independent Voters of
10Illinois-Independent Precinct Organization); he was a longtime
11member of the Democratic Party of Oak Park and worked for
12progressive candidates in Oak Park, Chicago, and surrounding
13communities; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Ron Chew is survived by his wife, Karla; his son,
15Ryan Chew (Lindsay Beller); his daughter, Tracey Kugelard
16(Glenn); his grandsons, Jackson and Carter Kugelard; his
17sisters, Barbara Roy (David) and Nancy Kitch (Gerald); a niece,
182 nephews, and 10 grandnephews and grandnieces, plus his Irish
19Doodle puppy, Mollie; therefore, be it
 
20    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL
21ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
22his family and friends, the passing of Ronald Chew; and be it

1    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
2presented to the family of Ronald Chew as a symbol of our
3sincere sympathy.
