HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Alice Carter; and

WHEREAS, Alice Carter was born in Pearl, Mississippi; she moved to Chicago's West Side in 1950; and

WHEREAS, Alice Carter loved cooking soul food since she was a child growing up in the Deep South of Mississippi; in 1961, she brought her "down-home cooking" to Chicago when she landed a job at a local West Side neighborhood eatery; in 1972, she opened her first restaurant on 5638 West Chicago Avenue; in 1983, she opened Alice's Soul Food at Madison and Parkside in Chicago; in 1988, she moved back to the Chicago Avenue spot, remaining there until she relocated to Division and Pine in 2004; the restaurant once again returned to its Chicago Avenue location in early 2010; and

WHEREAS, Alice Carter was well regarded by her many customers for her attention to customer service and her warm and welcoming demeanor; and

WHEREAS, In addition to running her restaurant, Alice Carter also worked for the Chicago Transit Authority beginning in the 1970s; and

WHEREAS, Alice Carter was the loving mother of 7 children; her daughter, Jackie, and her son, Glenn, are the current managers of Alice's Soul Food; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Alice Carter; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Alice Carter as an expression of our sympathy.
