HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, In recognition of Women's History Month in the State of Illinois, the members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to recognize State Senator Iris Martinez as the first Latina Illinois State Senator; and

WHEREAS, In 2003, Senator Martinez was the first Latina woman to be elected to the Illinois State Senate; and

WHEREAS, Senator Martinez has been particularly concerned with issues concerning women's health; in her first year in Springfield, she ensured that community agencies like the Children's Place, an agency that works with children and families affected by HIV and AIDS, and Concordia Avondale Community Center, which provides daycare, after-school programs, and a center for seniors, received State funding to continue their programming; and

WHEREAS, To help protect consumers from becoming victims of identity theft, Senator Martinez helped pass a law that requires all insurance cards be issued without a Social Security number; and

WHEREAS, In 2004, Senator Martinez was awarded the Hillary Rodham Clinton Leadership Award, an award presented to an elected official by the Illinois Democratic Women's organization; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize State Senator Iris Martinez on being elected the first Latina Illinois State Senator; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to State Senator Iris Martinez as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
