HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., on its 70th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded in 1913 by 22 students at Howard University; and

WHEREAS, The East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is observing its 70th anniversary, coming to East St. Louis on June 6, 1942 in the form of Gamma Eta Chapter; in keeping with Delta's mandate at the sorority's 1958 national convention, Gamma Eta became the East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter; and

WHEREAS, The East St. Louis Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., is one of the cultural, civic, and social mainstays of the community, using the sorority's Five Point Programmatic Thrusts-Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement; and

WHEREAS, Chapter members use their collective strengths to promote academic excellence, to provide scholarships, to provide support to the underserved, to educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy, and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities; and

WHEREAS, The multi-million dollar Delta Child Development Center is one of the economic and educational jewels of the metropolitan area and serves as a chapter example of economic development and educational development; and

WHEREAS, The goals and objectives set by the 9 forward looking women, represented by surviving Charter Member Abbie Lou Hampton Martin, are being met; chapter members continue to use education, religion, fortitude, and sisterhood to bring those goals and objectives to fruition; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., on the occasion of its 70th anniversary and wish the membership many happy years to come; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the East St. Louis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
