HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Melvin
4Alexander, Sr. of Chicago, who passed away on January 10, 2011;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, Melvin Alexander, Sr. was born on January 23,
71932, in Chicago, the son of Carmelia and William Alexander; he
8was a graduate of Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago; he
9received further education in California, specializing in the
10area of law enforcement; and
 
11    WHEREAS, He was baptized at the Canaan Baptist Church by
12the late Reverend Essex Elijah Franklin; and
 
13    WHEREAS, He served in the United States Army and was a
14decorated Artillery Sergeant in the Korean War; he served for
1533 years with the Chicago Police Department, served the city of
16Chicago as Special Detail to the late Mayor Harold Washington,
17and subsequently as Executive Director of the Office of
18Municipal Investigations; and
 
19    WHEREAS, He later served Cook County as Director of the
20Child Support Enforcement Division of the Sheriff's Department
21until his retirement; and

1    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his sister, Geraldine
2Floyd; his brother, Leslie Alexander, Sr.; and his son, Melvin
3Alexander, Jr.; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Melvin Alexander, Sr. is survived by his
5daughters, Angela Holbrook (Frank) and Aileen Gay (Derrick);
6his sons, Anthony and Michael (Rosemary); his sisters,
7Elverneece A. Moore and Norma J. Cantrell; his sister-in-law,
8Yolanda Alexander; his 17 grandchildren; his 17
9great-grandchildren; his nieces, nephews, other relatives, and
10friends; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
14Melvin Alexander, Sr.; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Melvin Alexander, Sr. as a symbol of
17our sincere sympathy.
