1 HOUSE RESOLUTION

2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the School Sisters
4 of Notre Dame on 150 years of service and ministry to
5 Teutopolis and the surrounding area; and

6     WHEREAS, On December 7th 1861, 3 School Sisters of Notre
7 Dame arrived in the village of Teutopolis from their
8 motherhouse in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to start teaching the
9 children of the newly established village; they were part of
10 the early pioneers of Illinois education; and

11     WHEREAS, The School Sisters of Notre Dame established
12 themselves in Teutopolis and continued to migrate to other
13 communities throughout the area; and

14     WHEREAS, Because of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and
15 their dedication to the teaching profession and the demand for
16 discipline, respect, and loyalty, they were an impressive
17 influence upon the students that they taught; with the welfare
18 of the student in mind, they were available to aid students
19 whenever there was a need; and

20     WHEREAS, The School Sisters of Notre Dame taught first
21 grade through the eighth grade; through their high school

1 courses, the School Sisters of Notre Dame established their
2 high expectations for the students; and

3     WHEREAS, The people of Teutopolis, the surrounding area,
4 and scattered locations throughout Illinois, have come to value
5 the results of a good education and recognize the impact that
6 the School Sisters of Notre Dame had upon the early educational
7 needs of Teutopolis; therefore, be it

8     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9 NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10 we congratulate the School Sisters of Notre Dame on their
11 celebration, October 9 2011; we thank the School Sisters of
12 Notre Dame for their service in the early educational needs of
13 the community and their continued presence in the community
14 today; and be it further

15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the School Sisters of Notre Dame as a symbol of
17 our respect and esteem.
