HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of the
4Bloomington Kiwanis Club on the 90th anniversary of the
5organization; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In the late spring of 1921 a group of men headed
7by Kaywin Kennedy, A. L. Beyer, and C. W. Frey, among others,
8called their friends and associates together to form a
9Bloomington Kiwanis Club; the group, which met at the Illinois
10House Hotel, grew to more than 50 members during the summer;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Soon after their formation the group applied to
13Kiwanis International to be chartered as an official club; the
14charter was granted on September 21, 1921; the charter was
15delivered to Bloomington on November 14, 1921 by the sponsoring
16Kiwanis Club of Springfield; and
 
17    WHEREAS, In 1931, the Bloomington Pantagraph, under the
18leadership of Kiwanian Reverend Breen, began sponsoring Camp
19Limberlost, a camp for area children; by 1932, Kiwanians were
20increasingly involved in the project and in 1934 the Kiwanis
21Club became a co-sponsor; in 1940, The Bloomington Kiwanis Club
22became the sole sponsor of the project; for more than 75 years

1this project has continued and is now the longest running
2continuous project in all of Kiwanis International. It is also
3the oldest residential camp in Illinois; and
 
4    WHEREAS, In 1932, The Bloomington Kiwanis Club, in
5association with the Bloomington Pantagraph, developed a
6Community Gardens project in which several acres of land south
7of town were loaned by land owners to plant vegetable gardens
8to help feed a community suffering from the deprivations of the
9Great Depression; the project provided work for unemployed men
10in the community and also provided a bounteous harvest to feed
11the hungry; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Bloomington Kiwanis Club has developed many
13fundraisers to help support its many projects, including the
14annual Peanut Days, the annual Pancake Days, Kiwanis Cheese
15sales, and its newest fundraiser, the Kiwanis Mother's Day
16Flower Sale, which has been a popular event on the first
17weekend in May; and
 
18    WHEREAS, In 2011, the Bloomington Kiwanis Club celebrates
1990 years of service to this community; over the years it has
20partnered with many agencies in the community to help make
21Bloomington a better place to live, work, and grow; therefore,

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3we congratulate the members of the Bloomington Kiwanis Club on
4this momentous anniversary and wish them the best for years to
5come; and be it further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the Bloomington Kiwanis Club as a symbol of our
8respect and esteem.
