HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, State Representative Monique D. Davis and the
3Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the
4death of DeLois Barrett Campbell, who passed away on August 2,
52011; and
 
6    WHEREAS, DeLois Barrett Campbell was born in Chicago in
71926; she grew up on the South Side with famous gospel singer
8Mahalia Jackson and composer Thomas A. Dorsey as neighbors; her
9father also served as a deacon at a local church and their
10mother sang in the chorus, which reinforced her great love of
11gospel music; and
 
12    WHEREAS, DeLois Barrett Campbell was a founding member of
13the Barrett Sisters, Chicago's legendary gospel trio; the
14Barrett Sisters began singing and harmonizing gospel music
15during the 1940s in a religious family of 10 children on the
16South Side of Chicago; upon the death of their cousin, Jonnie
17Mae Hudson, sister Rodessa Porter joined the trio, creating the
18Barrett Sisters; the group's growing reputation earned them a
19recording debut in 1963, with the album "Jesus Loves Me"; the
20group subsequently attained international attention for their
21work in the acclaimed 1982 documentary "Say Amen, Somebody",
22which yielded appearances on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" and
23more than 50 world tours; and

1    WHEREAS, DeLois Barrett Campbell was preceded in death by
2her husband, the Reverend Frank Campbell; and
 
3    WHEREAS, DeLois Barrett Campbell is survived by her sister,
4Billie Barrett GreenBey; her daughters, Sue Ladd and Mary
5Campbell; and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren;
6therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of
10DeLois Barrett Campbell; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to the family of DeLois Barrett Campbell as an
13expression of our sympathy.
