HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the members of the Champaign County Committee on Aging on the occasion of the organization's 50th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, The Champaign County Committee on Aging was formed in 1961 as a subcommittee of the Welfare Committee of the United Community Council; the Committee was created as the planning and coordinating body for social welfare services for Champaign County; the Committee also served in an advisory capacity to the Champaign County United Fund (now the United Way) and was funded by that agency; and

WHEREAS, The Champaign County Committee on Aging was created mainly through the efforts of Mrs. Helen Harland, who at that time was the Executive Director of Family Service of Champaign County, working cooperatively with Mr. Jack Coyle, who was the Executive Director of the United Fund and United Community Council; Mrs. Harland felt that the aged were being overlooked, under-served, and under-represented by the various service agencies and institutions; and

WHEREAS, The Champaign County Committee on Aging seeks to promote cooperation and communication among all services and organizations interested in the problems and concerns of aging, work toward the development of useful and meaningful needed services for the elderly in Champaign County, and provide public education on the needs of and the services provided for the elderly; and

WHEREAS, From the beginning, the Champaign County Committee on Aging's membership has consisted of representatives from numerous social welfare and health agencies, such as Family Service of Champaign County, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, the Public Housing Authority, and the Social Security Administration, among others; other organizations, such as the Retired Teachers Association, service clubs, certain interested community leaders, consumers of services, and minority groups have also joined the Committee to help those in need; and

WHEREAS, The Champaign County Committee on Aging sponsors numerous programs to benefit the elderly of Champaign County, including the Christmas Parties, the Meals on Wheels program, the Action on Aging research, action, and demonstration project, grocery delivery services, the Senior Talent Employment Pool, and TeleCare; the Committee also sponsors numerous workshops and forums to educate people about issues affecting the elderly in Champaign County; and

WHEREAS, The Champaign County Committee on Aging will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a celebration on June 14, 2011 at Provena Home Care in Champaign; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the members of the Champaign County Committee on Aging on the occasion of the organization's 50th anniversary and wish them continued success in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Champaign County Committee on Aging as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
