HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the 4th and 5th grade students and teachers at Homestead Elementary School in Aurora for their outstanding achievement in raising money for Haiti earthquake relief efforts; and

WHEREAS, In the last year, the world has suffered many great tragedies, from the devastating earthquake in Haiti to the earthquake in Japan to the most recent tornados tearing through the Southern United States; and

WHEREAS, Doing their part, students at Homestead Elementary School have been learning about Haiti and have created a mural depicting how Haitians live and how they have dealt with the horrible earthquake; and

WHEREAS, Realizing the extreme conditions currently facing people in Haiti, students and teachers embarked on a journey partnered with Free the Children to collect and raise money in an effort to rebuild schools; and

WHEREAS, In just a few short months, students and teachers at Homestead Elementary School were able to raise $8,500, which is enough to build and furnish a school in Haiti; and

WHEREAS, Students raised money by having garage sales, setting up lemonade stands, and doing chores throughout the neighborhood; other students sang, walked dogs, and baby sat to help reach their goal; students also passed along donation jars throughout the school and local businesses; and

WHEREAS, In this tough economic climate, the motivated students of Homestead Elementary School were able to meet their goal in just a few months, becoming the first school in the Free the Children program to raise enough money to build a school in Haiti and bolster hope for the new school's community; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the 4th and 5th grade students and teachers at Homestead Elementary School in Aurora for their outstanding achievement in raising money for a new school in Haiti; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the 4th and 5th grade students and teachers at Homestead Elementary School in Aurora as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
