HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The City of Lanark is located in the Township of Rock Creek, in the County of Carroll, of the Northwestern region of the State of Illinois, characterized by its picturesque architecture and beautiful tree-lined streets; and

WHEREAS, The year 2011 has been dedicated to celebrating the 150th year since the City of Lanark was first settled; and

WHEREAS, The town's original name was Glasgow, but since there was already a town by that name, the name became Lanark; and

WHEREAS, The name Lanark was taken from the name of a county in Scotland in which a Lanark banker once lived; and

WHEREAS, Acting on behalf of the Northern Illinois Railroad Company, D. W. Dame purchased 80 acres of land and John Nycum donated 80 acres more to the railroad for the town site; and

WHEREAS, The Northern Illinois Railroad Company donated generous amounts of this land for the school, city park, and churches as the city was laid out by D. W. Dame; and

WHEREAS, D. W. Dame was the first Mayor; and

WHEREAS, The City of Lanark has set aside the dates of June 23 through June 26, 2011, to celebrate this momentous milestone during the annual Old Settlers Days celebration; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the citizens of Lanark as they celebrate the community sesquicentennial; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Lanark Mayor Ed Stern as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
