HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Forty years after Congress passed the
3Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), promising every
4worker the right to a safe job, the protections in OSHA have
5saved hundreds of thousands of lives and prevented millions of
6workplace injuries; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Nationally in 2007, despite current safety laws,
8more than four million workers were injured and 5,488 workers
9were killed due to job hazards; and
 
10    WHEREAS, On April 28, 2011 organized labor will observe
11Workers' Memorial Day all across the country to remember those
12who have suffered and died on the job and to renew the fight
13for safe workplaces for all workers; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16the Illinois House of Representatives recognizes that as long
17as there are workers seriously injured or killed on the job,
18there will be a need to support stronger safety and health laws
19in our State and country and will work to that end; and be it
20further
 
21    RESOLVED, That the Illinois House of Representatives will

1encourage the Illinois congressional delegation and President
2Barack Obama to continue to revise, revamp and strengthen our
3federal workplace safety laws and to properly fund OSHA
4programs and staff; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That the Illinois House of Representatives
6offers its deep felt sympathy and understanding to the families
7of workers who have been seriously injured or killed on the
8job; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That the Illinois House of Representatives
10officially declares April 28, 2011 as Workers' Memorial Day in
11Illinois.
