HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Ruth
4Geyer Lerner, who passed away on October 16, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Ruth Lerner was born on December 8, 1923, in
6Vejprty, in what is now the Czech Republic; as a child, she and
7her family were forced into hiding after the rise of the Nazis
8in Europe during World War II; after the war, she immigrated to
9the United States, attended medical school, and met her future
10husband, Herbert Lerner; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Ruth Lerner and her husband worked as
12pediatricians at their clinic in Hyde Park for over 50 years,
13where they gained a sterling reputation as skilled and generous
14doctors who would provide free services for poorer patients;
15and
 
16    WHEREAS, Ruth Lerner was an active participant in the civil
17rights and peace movements during the 1960s and 1970s and
18marched with Dr. Martin Luther King in Cicero, Selma, Alabama,
19and Washington, D.C.; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Ruth Lerner was an accomplished artist and
21musician, playing guitar and singing at peace rallies; her

1guitar playing inspired her son to become a professional
2musician; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Ruth Lerner enjoyed nature, the arts, crafting
4homemade furniture and ornaments, and participating in
5numerous sports, including shot put, tennis, swimming, and
6racquetball; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Ruth Lerner is survived by her loving husband,
8Herbert; her sons, Claude and Peter; her daughter, Heidi; her
9grandchildren, Camille, Luke, Jasmine, and Matthew; her
10sister, Inge; and her many other family members and friends;
11therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of
15Ruth Geyer Lerner; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Ruth Lerner as an expression of our
18sympathy.
