HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Chicago
4Fire Department Captain Herbert "Herbie" Johnson, who
5tragically passed away while saving several families from a
6burning home in Chicago on November 2, 2012; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson served with distinction as a
8firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department for over 30 years;
9he was the first one to arrive at a reported attic blaze in a
10home in the Gage Park neighborhood of Chicago, and thanks to
11his efforts, many lives were saved that day; however, Capt.
12Johnson was tragically killed as a result of injuries sustained
13in the fire; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson served as a volunteer in
152001 to aid in rescue efforts at Ground Zero after the 9/11
16terrorist attacks; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson was the recipient of the
18Firefighting Medal of Honor in 2007 after rescuing children
19from a building in Chicago; and
 
20    WHEREAS, In addition to his duties as a firefighter, Capt.
21Herbert Johnson supported a camp that helped burn victims,

1cooked for various charity events, and drove fire engines in
2parades for the Chicago Fire Department; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson was the devoted husband of
4Susan; the loving father of Cpl. Thomas (USMC), Laurie, and
5Michael "Mickey"; the dear brother of Julie (the late Douglas)
6Marcinek, Mary Cay, Peggy (Dave) Ladd, John, James (Theresa),
7Ted (Ruth), and Terry; the cherished son of the late Herbert J.
8and Joan; and the dear uncle, cousin, and friend of many;
9therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
13Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbert "Herbie" Johnson; and
14be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Capt. Herbert Johnson as an
17expression of our sympathy.
