HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbert "Herbie" Johnson, who tragically passed away while saving several families from a burning home in Chicago on November 2, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson served with distinction as a firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department for over 30 years; he was the first one to arrive at a reported attic blaze in a home in the Gage Park neighborhood of Chicago, and thanks to his efforts, many lives were saved that day; however, Capt. Johnson was tragically killed as a result of injuries sustained in the fire; and

WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson served as a volunteer in 2001 to aid in rescue efforts at Ground Zero after the 9/11 terrorist attacks; and

WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson was the recipient of the Firefighting Medal of Honor in 2007 after rescuing children from a building in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his duties as a firefighter, Capt. Herbert Johnson supported a camp that helped burn victims, cooked for various charity events, and drove fire engines in parades for the Chicago Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson was the devoted husband of Susan; the loving father of Cpl. Thomas (USMC), Laurie, and Michael "Mickey"; the dear brother of Julie (the late Douglas) Marcinek, Mary Cay, Peggy (Dave) Ladd, John, James (Theresa), Ted (Ruth), and Terry; the cherished son of the late Herbert J. and Joan; and the dear uncle, cousin, and friend of many; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbert "Herbie" Johnson; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Capt. Herbert Johnson as an expression of our sympathy.
