HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Congregation Kneseth Israel on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, In 1892, a group of Jewish citizens of Elgin organized a house of worship in the city; the first families were farmers, merchants, and tradesmen; many of these families helped supervise the production of the uniforms in the Chicago garment district for Civil War volunteers; and

WHEREAS, The congregation worshipped on the second floor of a building in Elgin and called themselves Congregation Tifereth Israel; the name changed to Congregation Kneseth Israel (CKI) when they merged with another local developing group; and

WHEREAS, The organization has grown to become the religious and cultural home to over 200 families from Elgin, the surrounding Fox Valley, and communities to the east; and

WHEREAS, Today, as throughout its history, the membership of Congregation Kneseth Israel has contributed significantly to the civic, cultural, educational, medical, commercial, legal, and emotional well-being of all citizens of Elgin and its surrounding communities; and

WHEREAS, Congregation Kneseth Israel continues to meet the spiritual needs and interests of a diverse and growing Jewish population throughout the Fox River Valley area and the surrounding counties of Kane, McHenry, DuPage, DeKalb, and northwest Cook; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Congregation Kneseth Israel on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of its founding; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Congregation Kneseth Israel as a expression of our esteem and respect.
