HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate Congregation
4Kneseth Israel on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of its
5founding; and
 
6    WHEREAS, In 1892, a group of Jewish citizens of Elgin
7organized a house of worship in the city; the first families
8were farmers, merchants, and tradesmen; many of these families
9helped supervise the production of the uniforms in the Chicago
10garment district for Civil War volunteers; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The congregation worshipped on the second floor of
12a building in Elgin and called themselves Congregation Tifereth
13Israel; the name changed to Congregation Kneseth Israel (CKI)
14when they merged with another local developing group; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The organization has grown to become the religious
16and cultural home to over 200 families from Elgin, the
17surrounding Fox Valley, and communities to the east; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Today, as throughout its history, the membership
19of Congregation Kneseth Israel has contributed significantly
20to the civic, cultural, educational, medical, commercial,
21legal, and emotional well-being of all citizens of Elgin and

1its surrounding communities; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Congregation Kneseth Israel continues to meet the
3spiritual needs and interests of a diverse and growing Jewish
4population throughout the Fox River Valley area and the
5surrounding counties of Kane, McHenry, DuPage, DeKalb, and
6northwest Cook; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate Congregation Kneseth Israel on the occasion of
10the 120th anniversary of its founding; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
12presented to Congregation Kneseth Israel as a expression of our
13esteem and respect.
