HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Philip H.
4Corboy; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Philip Corboy grew up in West Rogers Park and
6attended St. Margaret Mary Grade School in Rogers Park and St.
7George's High School in Evanston; he subsequently attended 4
8colleges and graduated first in his class from the Loyola
9University Chicago School of Law in 1949; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Philip Corboy served with pride as a member of the
11United States Army; and
 
12    WHEREAS, After working for a short time with the City of
13Chicago, Philip Corboy began working for James Dooley, a
14prominent personal injury lawyer who eventually became an
15Illinois Supreme Court justice; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Philip Corboy began his own legal practice in
171952; he practiced personal injury trial law for more than 50
18years and was the co-founder of the Chicago firm Corboy &
19Demetrio; he continued practicing law into his early 80s; and
 
20    WHEREAS, From 1974 through 2000, the law firm of Corboy &

1Demetrio secured 387 settlements in excess of $1 million; his
2firm worked on the Tylenol poisoning case, the crashes of
3commercial jetliners, and the 1995 collision between a train
4and school bus that killed 7 students in Fox River Grove; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was listed by the National Law
6Journal as one of the top 100 most influential lawyers in the
7country since beginning its survey in 1985 and was one of only
813 lawyers nationwide to hold that distinction; he was listed
9in "The Best Lawyers in America" since its inception in 1987;
10he was also the recipient of the 1996 Big Shoulders
11Humanitarian Award for their commitment to a fund for
12inner-city Catholic schools; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was the first personal injury lawyer
14to be elected president of the Chicago Bar Association in 1972;
15he served as president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers
16Association; he was a former chairman of the Section of
17Litigation of the American Bar Association and a former chair
18of the American Bar Association's Special Committee on Medical
19Professional Liability; he also served as general counsel for
20the Illinois Democratic Party and served on the boards of
21directors of numerous business, legal, and charitable groups
22and as a member of numerous medical and legal task forces; and
 
23    WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was well known throughout his

1community for his charity work; he led the Catholic Archdiocese
2'Big Shoulders' fund for years; buildings were also dedicated
3to him at the Loyola University School of Law and a room was
4named for him at the Chicago Bar Association; he was also
5involved in the Catholic Church Extension Society and was a
6confidante to Cardinal Joseph Bernardin; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was preceded in death by his
8children, Bobby and Joan Corboy; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Philip Corboy is survived by his wife, Mary
10Dempsey; his sons, Philip H. "Flip" Corboy Jr., John R. Corboy,
11and Thomas M. Corboy; his 8 grandchildren; and his brother;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
16Philip H. Corboy; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Philip Corboy as an expression of
19our sympathy.
