HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Raymond
4L. Schaeffer of Carlyle, who passed away on May 1, 2012; and
 
5    WHEREAS, He was born on the family farm south of Beckemeyer
6on August 13, 1922, to Louis and Cecilia, nee Beckmann,
7Schaeffer; after his mother passed away in December of 1927, he
8was raised by his uncle and aunt, Fred "Fritz" and Elizabeth
9Beckmann in Bartelso; and
 
10    WHEREAS, After graduating from grade school in Bartelso in
111936, he worked as a farmhand in the Bartelso area; he went to
12work at the Moran shoe factory in Carlyle in 1941 and it was
13there that he met his future wife, Dorothy Schiermann of
14Carlyle; he and Dorothy were married at St. Mary Church in
15Carlyle, on July 11, 1944; and
 
16    WHEREAS, As a member of the "Greatest Generation," Ray
17served in General Dean's 44th Infantry Division of the United
18States Army in Europe in World War II; he worked as a
19bricklayer and contractor for many years and later was a life
20insurance salesman for CK&L of I; Ray was an active member and
21past commander of the VFW Post 3523 in Carlyle; he was also a
22charter member of the Bartelso Catholic War Veterans, and a

1member of the Beckemeyer American Legion Post 1227 and Carlyle
2Knights of Columbus; and
 
3    WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; his
4brothers, John Schaeffer and Cyril Schniers; his sister, Mary
5Gehrs; his sister-in-law, Mary Alice Schaeffer; and his
6brothers-in-law, Ferdy Gehrs and Kenny Koenig; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Raymond L. Schaeffer is survived by his wife of 67
8years, Dorothy; their children and spouses, Kay (Ed) Agustin,
9Barb (Dan) Haselhorst, Marilyn (Gary) Setser, Dan (Maureen)
10Schaeffer, Pat (Rich) Boien, and Dave (Kathy) Schaeffer; his
11brother, Vic Schaeffer; his sister, Stella Koenig; and his
12sisters-in-law, Alvina Schaeffer and Janet Schniers; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Ray is survived by 16 grandchildren who were his
14greatest joy; he passed away one week after the birth of his
15tenth great-grandchild; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Ray was laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery
17following a service with Reverend George Mauck at St. Mary's
18Church in Carlyle, the same church where he and his wife
19married, commemorated their 60th wedding anniversary, attended
20church regularly for the majority of their lives, and
21recognized innumerable milestones in the growth of their loving
22family; and

1    WHEREAS, Ray lived every day with a grateful heart and a
2radiant sense of humor, playing bingo regularly with his
3brother Vic, becoming a Wii bowling team member at the Carlyle
4Healthcare Center, singing to his wife Dorothy, gathering the
5family together for his 89th birthday celebration, and cheering
6his beloved St. Louis Cardinals to their 2011 World Series win;
7therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
11Raymond L. Schaeffer; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That we pledge to continue to remember and
13cherish in our hearts the time spent in uniform by all of our
14American veterans; our country is what it is today because of
15these brave men and women; and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Raymond L. Schaeffer as a symbol of
18our sincere sympathy.
