HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Martha
4Ann Burns; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Martha Burns was born in Chicago, on January 22,
61941; her parents were Anna Lou and John Doyle; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Martha Burns was raised on the West Side of
8Chicago in the Robert Brooks Housing Projects; she attended St.
9Joseph Mission and School; she was baptized at St. Joseph
10Mission in 1947 and she was confirmed at Holy Family Church in
111949; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Martha Burns was employed at an ice-cream cone
13making factory and worked as a clerk at Spiegel's before
14beginning a 36-year career with the United States Postal
15Service; she began her career at the USPS as a temp during
16Christmas time; when her outstanding job performance was duly
17noted by her supervisor, she began working at the post office
18full-time; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Martha Burns enjoyed reading, the arts, poetry,
20plays, museums, the opera, historic places, artifacts,
21dancing, listening to music, and sports of all kinds,

1especially bowling, basketball, and tennis; she also won many
2tournaments in the semi-pro bowling circuit during the 1970s
3and 1980s and was named the Sun-Times Semi-Pro Bowler of the
4Year twice; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Martha Burns was a member of numerous
6organizations that promoted helping disenfranchised persons,
7especially those with children; she was also a staunch believer
8in supporting black owned businesses; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Martha Burns was preceded in death by her parents;
10her husband, Wallace (BeBe) Burns; and her brothers, Ronald and
11Donald; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Martha Burns is survived by her children, Paul
13(Lisa) Sidney, Steven (Veronica) Sidney, Marcella
14Wuertenberger, and Angela and Sharron Brandon; her
15grandchildren, Nolen (Aisha) Davis, Kelsey, Maxwell, Andrew,
16Hallie Sidney, Ronel (Vanessa) Correia, Steven II and Octavia
17Sidney, Elona Rios, Darrell Prouty, George Galloway, and Savion
18Johnson; her 12 great-grandchildren; her siblings, Leona
19Doyle, Lucius (Vernia) Doyle, and Kenneth (Merle) Doyle; her
20sisters by proxy, Joanne Jacobson, Annette (Roy) Shabazz, and
21Marion Woodberry; her brothers by proxy, Jerome Gray and John
22and Perry King; her sisters-in-law, Arme Doyle and Lenora
23Doyle; her brother-in-law, George (Joan) Floyd; her 'son cross

1the street', Eugene McCoy; and her many nephews, nieces, other
2relatives, friends, and acquaintances; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of
6Martha Ann Burns; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the family of Martha Burns as an expression of our
9sympathy.
