HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Bird watching and other nature activities provide
3citizens young and old with valuable opportunities to learn
4about the environment and the need to preserve the Earth; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Bird conservation efforts date back to 1869, when
6Michigan passed a law to protect the Passenger Pigeon; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In North America, 618 million acres of land,
8freshwater, and marine areas or approximately 9% of the
9continent has been dedicated as wildlife habitat; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Public awareness and concern are crucial
11components of conserving those areas and the birds and other
12wildlife that live in those areas; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Citizens who are enthusiastic about birds and
14nature, informed about threats to the natural world, and
15empowered to become involved in addressing those threats can
16make a tremendous contribution to maintaining healthy bird
17populations and protecting bird habitats; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Interest in stewardship and conservation can grow
19by modeling conservation activities and involving people young
20and old in those activities; and

1    WHEREAS, There are many educational materials available to
2school districts, parents, and citizens to foster public
3awareness about bird and nature conservation; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
6SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate May 1, 2012 as Bird
7Watching Day in the State of Illinois and encourage school
8districts and teachers in this State to participate in and host
9activities to teach students and citizens about bird and nature
10conservation; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the
12superintendent of each school district in this State.
