SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-696 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides for the issuance of Police Medal of Valor plates to residents of Illinois who meet eligibility requirements prescribed by the Secretary of State. Provides that in addition to the appropriate registration fees, an applicant for the special plate shall be charged an original issuance fee of $25 and a fee of $25 for each renewal. Provides that $10 of the additional original issuance fee and $23 of the renewal fee shall be deposited into the Drivers Education Fund. Provides that $15 of the original issuance fee and $2 of the renewal fee shall be deposited into the Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 10. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5Section 3-696 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-696 new)
7    Sec. 3-696. Police Medal of Valor license plates.
8    (a) The Secretary, upon receipt of an application made in
9the form prescribed by the Secretary, may issue special
10registration plates designated as Police Medal of Valor license
11plates to residents of Illinois who meet eligibility
12requirements prescribed by the Secretary of State. The special
13plates issued under this Section shall be affixed only to
14passenger vehicles of the first division and motor vehicles of
15the second division weighing not more than 8,000 pounds. Plates
16issued under this Section shall expire according to the
17multi-year procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of this
18Code.
19    (b) The design and color of the plates is wholly within the
20discretion of the Secretary. The Secretary may allow the plates
21to be issued as vanity or personalized plates under Section
223-405.1 of this Code. The plates are not required to designate
23"Land of Lincoln", as prescribed in subsection (b) of Section

13-412 of this Code. The Secretary shall prescribe stickers or
2decals as provided under Section 3-412 of this Code.
3    (c) An applicant for the special plate shall be charged a
4$25 fee for original issuance in addition to the appropriate
5registration fee. Of this fee, $10 shall be deposited into the
6Drivers Education Fund and $15 shall be deposited into the
7Secretary of State Special License Plate Fund, to be used by
8the Secretary to help defray the administrative processing
9costs.
10    For each registration renewal period, a $25 fee, in
11addition to the appropriate registration fee, shall be charged.
12Of this fee, $23 shall be deposited into the Drivers Education
13Fund and $2 shall be deposited into the Secretary of State
14Special License Plate Fund.
 
15    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
16becoming law.
